I get a newsletter from AllPeopleQuilt.com and this past week it included a link to a little wall quilt called Rolling Stones.
Since I’m not starting any big projects right now because it’s the time of year I focus on hand quilting, and I so enjoyed doing the last doll quilt, I decided to give it a go.
It’s a cute little quilt. They give you the option to piece the flying geese by paper piecing and include a foundation to print. They also give the cutting/piecing info for those who prefer to do the piecing the traditional way.
Of course I had to change a few things. I changed the colors and some of the color placement. Then, once I had the center portion of the quilt done I decided to add a border of flying geese before adding the solid border. Before borders this measures 14″x14″

Here I laid the quilt top on the white shirting print I used in the blocks.
I thought I’d add a narrow indigo binding?

Then I wondered…how would the little quilt look with a cheddar border?
I laid the quilt on top of the cheddar fabric and placed indigo corner squares on top of the cheddar corner stones. The cheddar corners made the top look sort of askew?

I also decided to see how the quilt would look with an indigo border. With this color border I should probably replace the indigo setting squares that are at the centers of the top and sides?
I’m still undecided right now…but thought I’d share one of my favorite quilting tools..my camera! A lot of times taking a pic lets you stand back from the piece you’re working on and see it in a different perspective.

I do like the indigo border. They’re all great though. Yes pictures often help.
They look like three wonderful quilts to me!! Would be difficult to choose one.
Love it, Ann! Either option would be lovely. I agree, the camera lens is often a good *clarifier*.
I have always loved the Rolling Stone pattern and it looks particularly nice with the Flying Geese border. I think all of three of the plain borders look wonderful. If I were making the decision, I would probably choose the cheddar — I think it would show off your beautiful hand quilting.
Yes I put this on my list of little quits to make too. Love using my camera for helping me make decisions as well.
If it was my choice I would use the blue, I think it makes the cheddar pop more, but like Martha said the Cheddar would be wonderful to show off your hand quilting….
can’t wait to see what you decide.
thanks for sharing…a great post.

Love the cheddar border and I like it large……
what a little beauty.
Happy sewing
Ann,
I like the indigo AND I like the cheddar. Can you do half and half? Like two sides/corners one color and two sides/corners the other?
Ann,
I love the cheddar. I think indigo would be my second choice. Those two allow the quilt to remain soft in appearance and make the center float.
Can’t wait to see what you do with it!
Ann, I’m sure whatever you decide will be wonderful. I don’t care for any of the borders as they don’t seem to enhance the quilt at all. Just my opinion! My vote is for no borders or a plain dark blue border. Since you are a master quilter you could quilt a beautiful pattern in the border.
What a great pattern! And yes, a camera is an excellent quilt tool!
I love the blue because it seems to set the whole centre free. The blue corner stones let the centre flow into the border.
I did a quilt with corner stones that matched the outer border without realising that you’re ‘not supposed to do that’. I kind of like it though.
I too love to take a look at a quilt project through the lens of a camera. It’s a GREAT tool!!!
I like the cheddar border. ; )
Ann, I love your version of this little quilt! I am working on a little quilt right now, all scrappy, but am definitely going to keep making these little quilts, so much fun, and almost instant gratification. I’m bookmarking this one….thought I had subscribed to the APQ newsletter, must not have. I like all your ideas, and I like both borders but am so passionate about blues, I think that’s my favorite…and I don’t mind the blue setting squares next to the border. I love your fabric choices and the crisp white shirting print against the darker fabrics. Whichever way you finish, it’ll be beautiful, pls be sure to post your finished quilt
Oh, and I agree about the camera, it’s a necessary quilting tool!
I like the Indigo the best. I don’t think that the shirting does a thing for it, so I wouldn’t use that one for sure. The cheddar looks nice, too, but I don’t think as nice as the Indigo…
All three give it such a different look. The shirting fabric makes it pop out. My favorite choice is the blue. Taking pictures is a great idea. Maybe I need to invest in a digital camera. I still rely on my old standby camera from years ago, so I have to pay for developing the film.
So pretty. The colors are beautiful! I’m loving this block. Can’t wait to see how you finish it.
Oh, blue and cheddar – what a great combination, and a great little quilt top. I like all three choices that you show. Usually, one just pops out and says, yep, that’s it. In this case, though, they all work. It just depends on what you want to see the most of. If I had to pick, I think it would be the cheddar, but I look forward to seeing what you choose!
