Snake in the Hollow

the quilt top cupboard006 The quilt top I’m pulling from the quilt top cupboard today is a Snake in the Hollow pattern. The pattern is usually done scrappy style and this one is no exception.

The top is pretty recent. I recall seeing some of the fabrics in it for sale in the stores in the past few years.

The blocks finish at 7.5″ each. As the top is now it’s 45″x 75″. To me, that’s a bit of an odd size? I think I’ll remove a few rows when I quilt it?
The design reminds me of a road twisting and turning through the countryside and I think this would be a fun play mat or “quiet time” nap quilt? A child could drive their toy cars on the roads. The pattern would be fun with the “road” pieces done in black, giving it more of a road effect?
The block is made up of two bow tie looking pieces in the center, then an arc and quarter circle in opposite corners.

The top is machine sewn and was purchased at a yard sale last Summer.

What a great quilt for playing cars on – it’s perfect! My brother had a Dresden Plate quilt with sashing that we spent many hours “driving” on when we were little kids. It was much like the prairie town we lived in – square blocks and straight streets :0) I do really like it – you sure go to interesting yard sales!

It’s a reallly interesting layout, it always reminds me of snakes and ladders.

I’ve seen that pattern done scrappy with blue roads, but I kind of like these more subtle shades of green — maybe this one is more like roads through a forest.

I’ve never seen this pattern being made in a single color theme before.
It looks like a lush green forest waiting to be explored along the winding path… so fun!
I would love to make this quilt some day. Thank you, Ann :)

this is fun, and love the idea of kids driving match-box cars on it, or thomas the tank.
    thanks for another good one

  7. This is a pattern I’ve not seen before. It’s interesting, and I think a child could easily entertain themselves with this one!!! Cars, horses, weebles, setting up dominoes… Hmmm, come to think of it, I could have fun with this quilt too! ; )

Ann this one is really neat, immediatly makes me think of verdant tropical rainforest with a river snaking through it. The yellow areas remind me of the patches along the river where farmers have cleared areas for agriculture.

The close up pic features some fabric I either have or have had in the past, I recognised it right away, the green with the tiny pink rose buds on it in the top left corner. My mum bought some and shared it with me a few years ago. Thanks for sharing another neat quilt
