Red and Blue What’s It?

Today’s post is a little short.  I’ve received my biopsy results and it wasn’t good news.  Now I’m waiting to see if my insurance will approve the surgery I need. I don’t like the waiting game….I’m not in a real good state of mind.

The piece I’m posting today is a “what’s it”?  Please forgive my photography..it wasn’t easy to get a pic of the whole thing.

I found this piece at the end of the day at a yard sale. It had a tag on it that said $2.  I figured a quilt top was worth that, bought it, and brought it home.

When I opened it out I was surprised to see that it was narrow and very long.  Too long to be a bed quilt.

The blocks are 4″ finished and the piece measures at roughly 44″x 180″.  The piece is machine sewn.

It’s hard to guess the date it was made because the fabrics are a solid color.

If I split the piece in half and arranged it as a square it would be around 88″x 90″.  Queen bed sized.  I probably won’t do that..as I don’t find the piece all that attractive. Is it OK to say that? ;)

I’m wondering what it was intended to be?  Any thoughts out there?

What was it intended to be? a mistake……. sad that the medical news was not good…. just plain bummer….. will wait with you on the next step and the one after that and the one after that…. I am sure many of us will be honored to wait with you.

  2. Martha says:

Oh Ann, I am so sorry to hear about the results of the biopsy, and I can certainly understand your concern about the surgery. Of course you want to have an especially good surgeon when they’re going to be operating on your face. Hopefully, the insurance company understands that and will get back to you right away — this waiting around is so stressful.

Please keep us all updated on your progress. Even though we’ve never met in person, you are a wonderful friend and quilt buddy, and I have learned so much reading your blog. I care about you!

Oh, I almost forgot…..I could not figure out what that piece was for — such a weird shape. I might put it together like you suggested for a picnic blanket. And yes…..it’s not very attractive and it’s okay to say that — especially when you paid $2 for it!

OK, so the news sucks! Your online quilter buddies will be with you every step of the way. Its just what we do.
Maybe it was for a long banquet table? I got a long narrow piece from a collector, but it had stitch marks down the side, like they had taken off a border. Not that it would have made it bed size, but I quilted it and I use it as a decorator piece on the foot of a double bed, it’s the perfect length.

Well..now I agree with all the above comments. I am an online friend that you do not even know you have. Because I love antique quilts so much, I eagerly await all your posts. So, now you have a medical issue and upcoming surgery. Not nice at all. I know that nothing really fixes the fear of all these things, but knowing that many have gone thru things before you and that we are all out here cheering you on, may help a little bit. As for the quilt, I am just now making a quilt for my outside deck futon. It will be very odd shaped just like the one you are showing. And it will not be a thoughtfully put together one because it will be in and out of weather and dogs and cats and grandchildren. So maybe your quilt was made for something unusual too…like the back seat of a wagon or car. Hang in there:)

    Ann,

Please do let me know if you need anything at all as you begin this journey. I will be thinking of you.

  6. Meredith says:

Sending youa big hug. It has a great graphic quality! Clicking on the photo and seeing it up close was a treat.

  7. Keeping my fingers crossed from good news from the insurance company and an excellent result from your surgery.

  8. pratima says:

Oh, Ann… I’m terribly sorry about the news. I can understand your trepidation about the surgery. Hope the waiting is not long and everything goes smoothly. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Do take care!
The quilt is really an odd sized one. I wonder what it was meant for.

  9. NancyC20 says:

It’s a cot quilt for Paul Bunyon!! Echoing everyone’s sentiments for the insurance and surgery. Big hugs.

  10. janet says:

I’m so sorry to hear your news wasn’t good! I hope you don’t have to wait too long to hear from the insurance!!
What an unusual top – I have no idea what it might have been intended for. Something specific I should think.

  11. barb says:

Oh ann, I’m sad and to hear your news. I’ll be keeping a good thought and prayer for you. You are such a ray of sunshine, it was so fun to meet you in June. I know we’d be great friends if we lived closer. I’m an email away, anytime.

the quilt? huh…..no idea. It’s so neatly done, I can imagine it was for anything other than an unusual household use.
you find the best deals! $2.00 !!! no way!

  12. Joyce says:

Sorry to hear the bad news but I just know it will all turn out ok! Sending good wishes and keeping you in my prayers.

As for the quilt piece, I would do what you suggested and quilt it as a queen size. It would likely sell to someone who loves modern art!

  13. Linda Joan says:

Hello! Could it be made into baby quilts?

  14. AnnieO says:

Oh crap! Sorry to hear that bad news has struck and your waiting will continue. Fingers crossed for a smooth trip to the surgeon and very little pain. Hugs!

No idea really what that was supposed to be. Maybe for upholstering something.

  15. Leslie says:

Well, I’m sure the insurance will approve, if not, it’s not that hard to appeal. Appeals that are reasonable are almost always successful. They just have to weed out the loonies who want size j boobs and stuff. I’ll bet you’ll get that approval lickety split.

  16. Alice says:

A banner? I quite like the colours but I would prefer red and white or blue and white. It looks nice in the photo though.

Best wishes for the waiting and the surgery.

  17. Cherie says:

Mimi summed it up well and indeed, I am honored to wait with you.

I like Martha’s idea about splitting the quilt top to make a square and use it for a picnic quilt. Seems perfect for that use…..nice enough but not too nice, you know?

My last piece of advice, try to keep as positive an attitude as you can…..really focus on positivity, a positive attitude can and does impact the outcome.

  18. LoriD says:

    A quilt project gone awry?!

I hope you can get taken care of quickly! Nothin’ worse than waiting. Hugs to you.

  19. Ann Marie says:

Maybe the quilter accidentally sewed the two halves of her project together along the wrong side, making it very long instead of square, got discouraged by the unsewing she’d have to do, set it aside and never got back to it. Or maybe she was attempting to get in the Guiness record book with the world’s longest quilt.

Hope you get some good news soon.

  20. Linda in NC says:

I am so sorry to hear your biopsy news. Having just helped my teen-aged daughter through months of cancer treatments, I understand how insurance companies can make a stressful time even more stressful; may they resolve this issue quickly for you in the best possible way.

Like Cherie said, look for the positive; avoid the negative. We your readers are with you in spirit though we may have never met (yet!).

  21. Ann, I’m so sorry the biopsy news wasn’t good. I’ll continue to pray that your insurance will cover the surgery and that it will be successful. Have faith and stay positive.

As for this strange little quilt, my thoughts are in the same direction as many other comments… I immediately thought to split it as you mentioned, also thought it would make a good picnic quilt. Even if it’s not a favorite, someone put a lot of time into all these HSTs, and the points look pretty good.

Please keep us posted…prayers are with you.

  22. Pokey Davis says:

Hoping your health news will improve! The waiting and not knowing is the toughest part. Prayers for you, Anne!

I like the hst’s, you got a bargain at two bucks. It sure seems like a lot of work for an unknown project… what if instead of splitting it to be the center of a quilt, you used it for a border around one?

  23. Pokey Davis says:

sorry for the misspelled name, Ann! The nice thing about prayer, though, God knows who you are praying for even when the name goes unmentioned!
    Hugs AND prayers, pokey

  24. Elaine says:

Consider this a virtual hug. I was saddened to hear of your unhappy news, my thoughts are with you.

I bought a quilt a few years ago in a local antique shop. A little pricey for me but it was talking to me, you know? After I got it home and really looked at it…is when I realized it was not meant for a bed, I don’t think anyway. It’s a grandmothers garden with the pathways in white and the flower centers black. Very, very strange indeed. I’ll have to dig it out again and take some pics of it for my blog, will let you know when I find it so you to can say, “what the heck?”

Take care Ann, you have alot of prayers coming your way.

  25. Kim McLean says:

I’m sorry to hear the bad news with your biopsies, I hope the insurance company approves your surgery quickly. My thoughts are with you.
As for the quilt top – its really long isn’t it! cheers, Kim McLean
