Vintage Ocean Waves

The quilt top I’m pulling from the quilt top cupboard today is a vintage Ocean Waves.

It dates from the 1930′s-40′s and is done scrappy style.

The yellow solid setting fabric got a bit washed out in this pic from the sun.  It’s a bit richer in real life.

The top is machine pieced and contains a wide range of fabrics that were common in the era it was made.  It may have been made from scraps left over from sewing, but could have been made from scraps that were sold for pennies a pound through mail order? I can just imagine how exciting it would  have been to order a couple of pounds of scraps and wait to see what you got!

The Ocean Waves pattern is one of my favorites.

I have several tops in my collection and have made a couple as well.

I plan on quilting this one some day.  :)

  1. this is a very pretty quilt and certainly a lot of work has gone into it… I am sure it would have been exciting to get scraps in the mail back then, its still exciting to get them now… thanks again Anne

  2. I could spend about a day examining all those wonderful fabrics. Ocean Waves is one of my favorites, too. ;o)

  3. Ocean wave pattern looks like a jewel to me – each triangle is like a facet of a precious stone. I think I see one in my future ;-)

  4. Wow, this is a beauty. How many vintage tops do you have and how long have you been collecting? Are you still collecting? Every one you show is beautiful.

  5. This is lovely – you’ll enjoy all those fabrics while you are quilting them. It looks like it is in great condition – what a find.
Good luck with your operation next week.

  6. This is one of my favorite patterns too…on my to-do list. One of the LQS sells bags of vintage scraps, am always tempted, one of these days will have to pick one up. I would have a hard time trying to decide which of these beautiful quilt tops to finish! Thanks once again for sharing.

  10. I love it! I’ve got one from my MIL…never could figure out how it was done. But just now looking ot yours (the distance helps, and hanging up) I think I’ve figured it out! Way easier than I thought. It’s a beautiful pattern. Will you be doing this one by hand?

  11. Give me a pound of scraps any day too, oh wait I have plenty and I’m sure there’ll be a quilt or two in them. I do love the sunny yellow and it’s a favourite pattern, one I’ve yet to tackle.

  12. Oh this is a beauty. It’s is heaven for us scrap quilters. I bet it’s so fun to study the scraps.
Was it hard to make one? Did you have to set in seams?
Quilting should be a challenge with all the seams on the back, but worth it!

  13. Wow! Look at all those lovely fabrics!! I really love the yellow background too.

  14. I love the Ocean Waves pattern. What a wonderful variety of fabrics in this one.! I have a quilt my Grandma made in the 40′s – my Dad remembers my Grandma using fabric from a box of scraps she bought together with bits leftover from sewing clothes. :0)

The Ocean Waves pattern is one of my favorites, too. I hope to make one — one of these days…. This is a very pretty example.

  16. Mmm, mmm, really like this quilt! I’m a big fan of yellow so this one really speaks to me. Are you going to add a border, or quilt and bind as is? Either way, it will be a wonderful cozy quilt.

  17. It’s really a lovely top, Ann. I’d love to see you work your magic and bring it to life!

  18. The yellow sorrounded by all these happy prints makes it such a joyful quilt! Thank you, Ann :)
    Hope you are doing well!

  19. Ann, I’m behind in reading your posts, and it appears that you are probably having your surgery today. I hope all goes well and they get everything out. Thank you for your skin cancer advice, and for all the joy you bring us everyday with your lovely quilts and quilt tops.

  20. Thinking of you, my friend. Prayers and ((((hugs)))) to you.
